Given this film’s record-breaking opening weekend, it is no exaggeration to call Top Gun: Maverick the summer’s first blockbuster. Even Cannes, a place typically allergic to films with mass appeal, (literally) rolled out the red carpet for Tom Cruise and this long-anticipated sequel. During my time at Cannes, I screened Maverick an entire week before its theatrical release, and the feel-good flick exceeded my sky-high expectations.
The sequel follows Maverick (Cruise) as he returns to Top Gun to train recent graduates for a nearly impossible mission. One of the pilots is none other than Rooster (Teller), Goose’s orphaned son. Goose and Maverick’s crackling tension drives the film with the impending mission applying even more pressure on their tenuous relationship.
A sequel of this magnitude could have easily relied on cameos, nostalgia, and homoeroticism to please…
